Electrician quotes: lighting points, materials and labour

Describe electrical points, circuits, panels, materials, tests and ancillary work in a clear commercial quote, with an illustrative example.

Two offers can list the same number of electrical points but cover different work. One includes circuits and materials; another assumes existing provisions. Explain each item to make an electrical quote comparable.

This guide covers the commercial document. Design, execution, testing and documentation require technical and regulatory assessment by competent people. The example is not system sizing or an installation specification.

Define points rather than leaving interpretation to the client

Describe each point's intended function: socket, switch, power supply or another purpose. Specify quantity and relevant characteristics. Make different counting methods visible. Numbers alone cannot support a fair comparison.

State agreed materials and product series when they affect price. For undecided choices, use explicit assumptions or separate alternatives. Do not imply any component chosen later is included.

Separate points, circuits and panel work where useful

“Complete installation” can conceal scope. Describe panel work, circuits, components and ancillary tasks. Commercial items should reflect technical assessment without adding unverified promises.

For per-point prices, clarify included materials, installation and connection. Do not add the same hours again as generic labour. Rebuild the pricing basis when separating work.

A readable example, not a design

Assume conditions for the room have been checked. These teaching figures are before applicable taxes:

  • Six agreed-specification socket points: 6 × €70 = €420.
  • Two control points defined in the attachment: 2 × €60 = €120.
  • Panel work described in the proposal: 1 × €250 = €250.
  • Tests and required documents for this case: 1 × €120 = €120.
  • Travel and preparation not included elsewhere: 1 × €40 = €40.

Subtotal: €950. Check the first three items do not already include preparation and tests. Commercial pricing must match technical content and actual planned activities.

Required documentation is not an arbitrary optional extra. Describe it appropriately after competent review. Avoid promising “certification of the whole system” when work concerns only part or the meaning is unclear.

Name ancillary work

Channels, repairs, painting, access and managing occupied areas can affect time and organisation. State which tasks are included and which belong to others. “Building work excluded” needs understandable boundaries.

For shops, consider opening hours and occupied areas. For B2B sites, clarify access and workstation downtime. For homes, check room availability. Identical components can still require different operating conditions.

Alternatives and changes

For two component series, state changes and shared services consistently so the client can compare. If point counts increase, reassess other tasks and design rather than automatically multiplying every variation.

For post-acceptance changes, identify new work and agree the next step. Keep the old proposal. Updated quantities, notes, timing and total must be consistent rather than changing only the final number.

Before sending

Check measurements and attachments, units, inclusions and total. Review the PDF on a phone: long descriptions must remain understandable. Improve wording if every line needs verbal explanation.

When the point count changes during selection

Request an updated list or identifiable reference to the agreed layout. Do not change a number while retaining a description for another configuration. Check with the responsible technical person whether tasks, materials or conditions change.

If reassessment is needed, explain the next step and revise after checking. A client may see one extra point as isolated, while the whole job needs reviewing. Describe the final outcome without promising compatibility or compliance of an unexamined configuration. Retain the selected attachment and document.
